Hydrogenation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Catalysis by Metal Complexes ((CMCO,volume 6))

Abstract

One of the most widely studied catalytic reactions is hydrogenation. All the early work on this involved using heterogeneous catalysts [1], but more recently, spurred on by the discovery of Wilkinson’s catalyst [2], a great deal of work has been done on homogeneous catalysts [3–6]. The success of the homogeneous catalysts has led to great interest in supporting them in order to combine the advantages inherent in their molecular nature with the ease of separation at the end of the reaction that should be possible if an insoluble support is used. Not surprisingly therefore many supported metal complex hydrogenation catalysts are little more than the corresponding homogeneous catalysts linked to a support. Whilst many of these have had inferior properties to their homogeneous analogues, a significant number have demonstrated enhanced activity and selectivity as well as greater stability and resistance to deactivation and decay. In the following sections there are many reports of such catalysts.
