Introduction of Metals onto Supports

Part of the book series: Catalysis by Metal Complexes ((CMCO,volume 6))

Abstract

In this chapter we shall be concerned with the introduction of the catalytically active metal site on to the support. Whilst the first supported catalysts involved ion-exchange resins in which a cationic metal complex ion was linked electrostatically to the support, the majority of supported metal complex catalysts involve covalent bonds between the metal and the support. Accordingly, after a brief look at ion-exchange based catalysts, this chapter will consider the coordination of metal complexes by functionalised supports, then the polymerisation of functionalised monomers, before examining the reactions between organometallic and metal-carbonyl complexes with metal oxide supports. The chapter concludes with a brief consideration of supported Ziegler-Natta catalysts, surface supported metal salts and finally complexes formed by transition metal oxides with main Group metal oxides.
