Part of the book series: The Jerusalem Symposia on Quantum Chemistry and Biochemistry ((JSQC,volume 17))

Abstract

SERS of molecules deposited at/near the surface of small noble metal particles is due to several origins, one of which is the electromagnetic (Mie-) resonance of the particles. This effect has been calculated to be extremely strong for proper systems of particles. Realistic particle systems as used for experiments, however, differ from these model systems. Changes resulting therefrom are qualitatively discussed by making use of well-known results of the optical plasma resonance extinction of such particle systems, which is caused by the same resonance of the inner field. In general, the enhancement is expected to be markedly reduced compared to the model calculations.
