Abstract

I discuss the response of a metal surface to an external electric field which varies slowly in space and time. Both electron-hole pair and phonon production is considered and the theoretical results are compared with inelastic electron scattering measurements from Cu (100). Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.
