Abstract

The implications of detailed balance are explored for collisions with a surface at a finite temperature. In particular it is shown that for a process taking place on the surface, the surface can shift the equilibrium constant provided that the surface temperature is kept different from the ambient gas temperature. The magnitude of the effect is governed by the energy accommodation of the surface. Another way of stating the result is that measuring the rates of both a forward and a reverse process does provide dynamical information. This is not the case for collisions in the gas phase.
