Abstract

The genetic variability in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm for the amount of atmospheric N fixed by the bean - Rhizobium phaseoli symbiosis has been estimated using direct methods such as growth on N-free medium (Rennie and Kemp, 1981) and 15N isotope dilution (Rennie and Kemp, 1983; Westermann et al., 1981), and indirect methods to analyze plant traits that affect fixation potential. Although the correlations between amounts of N2 fixed and indirect measures such as plant mass, nodule mass and acetylene reduction activity (ARA) vary depending on a great many factors that affect symbiotic expression, indirect methods have been used to select plants with enhanced fixation potential (McFerson, 1983). Although the indirect methods offer relative simplicity, low cost and utility for large numbers of samples, the effectiveness of selection when they are used as selection criteria must be determined by measuring the superiority of selected progenies relative to their parents and other standard genotypes.
