Abstract

Chemical thermodynamics can provide information about the maximum theoretical values of parameters such as the specific gravimetric and volumetric energy density. Although actual cells never attain these values the thermodynamic evaluation does provide a means for the qualitative comparison between different electrochemical couples. In actual operation departure from these maximum theoretical values is a measure of the performance efficiency of a battery. Principal features influencing the performance of a particular battery. Include the rate and depth of discharge and this type of information is often displayed on specific power-specific energy curves. As the specific power is dependant ipon the relevant; electrode kinetics this aspect of the performance of battery systems is outside the scope of the present contribution and indeed is considered elsewhere in the present volume.
