Abstract

Almost all countries have government agencies charged with responsibility for supervising financial institutions. The reason is that the proper functioning of financial markets has been a matter of political concern for many years. It is thus a common feature of the countries we are concerned with at this colloquium that they have supervisory systems. The systems differ, however, in many respects, and it is therefore likely that the needs to adjust them because of shifting frontiers in financial markets are somewhat different from country to country.
