Abstract
Any discussion of the economic and financial problems confronting the Netherlands must be preceded by a review of the international economic environment. Since the quadrupling of oil prices five years ago, the international economy has borne the marks of the oil price rises and their aftermath of higher energy prices in general, with all the direct and indirect consequences which have ensued. I should like to recall to memory the principal effects which the oil crisis has had since 1973/74. They were apparent in the balances of payments, prices, profitability, economic growth and employment.
