Abstract
My aim in this paper is to review the current state of findings on recent life events and, to a lesser extent, social support in clinical psychiatric disorder. Life events are highly relevant to the discussion of social support, since social support is postulated to have major protective effects against them and they are often studied together with it. The life event field is now well developed and in the last few years has produced its own reaction in the form of a vigorously critical lobby. This will also enable me to make some methodological points which I believe are equally important for social support but are sometimes disregarded.
