Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 16))

Abstract

Soils are enzymically active. Enzymes in soils are of plant, animal and microbial origin, and collectively their activities express the metabolic status of soils at a given time. Many assays have been devised to measure the activities of a wide range of enzymes in soils, usually under conditions which minimize or eliminate the proliferation of microorganisms during the assay period. Such activities are thought to be a more direct expression of soil biological activity generally, or of the activities of specific processes of nutrient cycling and organic matter turnover, than say measurements of microbial numbers.
