Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 16))

Abstract

For many years sulphur was a neglected element in soil science12, although it has a vital role in plants in the production of protein, vitamins, chlorophyll, glucoside oils, and in structurally and physiologically important sulphide linkages in cell walls and sulphydryl groups of enzymes14. In recent years, however, sulphur has received more attention due mainly to reports of sulphur deficiency in crops, to concern over the effects of acid rain, and sulphur dioxide pollution, and to work on ochre deposition in field drainage systems.
