Abstract

Thermosetting polymers are very widely employed as structural adhesives and in glass-, polyamide — and carbon-fibre composites. They are amorphous, highly-crosslinked polymers and this structure results in these materials possessing a high modulus and fracture strength, low creep and good performance at elevated temperatures. However, their structure also leads to low toughness and poor crack resistance. One of the most successful methods of increasing their toughness, without significantly decreasing other important properties, is to incorporate a second phase of dispersed rubbery particles into the crosslinked polymer. The present review will consider the inter-relationships between the chemistry, microstructure and mechanical behaviour of multiphase thermosetting polymers and discuss some of the applications of such materials.
