Abstract
High impact polymers are two-phase composites. In a typical case, the major component is a rigid thermoplastic or thermoset which forms a continuous matrix, and the minor component is an elastamer which is dispersed uniformly throughout the material in the form of small particles. The volume fraction of particles is rarely if ever equal to the volume fraction of the elastomeric phase. Electron microscopy reveals a variety of complex morphologies within the rubber particles, which may contain very large amounts of the rigid phase, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Polystyrene sub-inclusions account for 75 to 80 percent of the total volume of the composite rubber particles in standard commercial grades of HIPS.
