The purpose of this chapter is an inventory of the types of carbohydrates in ground water, seawater, river water, and lake water and a discussion of distribution, composition, and chemistry of dissolved carbohydrates. The chapter begins with general considerations concerning the amount and structure of carbohydrates, which is then followed by detailed studies of carbohydrates in various natural waters.
