Abstract
The hypothesis of Bishop (1964) that embryonic loss is of genetic origin and unavoidable is fatalistic. In mice 10 generations of selection increased embryo survival from 80 to 90% and it was shown that survival rate was determined by the mother; similarly we should attempt to increase embryo survival in farm animals.
