Abstract

Gastric operations render the gastric mucosa abnormal.1 Of special concern is the development of severe dysplasia and cancer in longstanding post-gastrectomy patients. Only screening of asymptomatic post-gastrectomy patients may allow detection of early malignancy. The yield of such endoscopic screening is probably too low and the technique is probably too invasive for widespread use, except in countries with a very high incidence of gastric malignancy. The low yield of endoscopic screening in asymptomatic patients, the average high age of the population at risk, and the high morbidity and mortality rates for total gastrectomy with increasing age, render the value of screening procedures doubtful.
