Abstract

A modified Grüntzig coronary angioplasty catheter, designed to permit continuous antegrade perfusion during dilatation was evaluated. During in-vitro tests with blood, flow rates between 12 and 28ml/min were measured at effective pressures between 50 and 100 mmHg. During in vivo tests in five dogs this catheter was compared with conventional catheter types which prevent antegrade flow during balloon inflation.

Time between balloon occlusion and appearance of the same degree of ischemia in the ECG ranged from 40 to 420 sec, mean 203 seconds, and 30 to 180 sec, mean 120 sec, for the modified and the conventional catheters, respectively. Prolongation of the intracoronary balloon inflation time may be valuable in selected patients.
