Genetics and Physiology of Follicle Recruitment and Maturation during Seasonal Anoestrus

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science ((CTVM,volume 31))

Summary

Studies using a number of different breeds indicate that mature follicles are present during seasonal anoestrus as well as during the breeding season. Their number is correlated with the ovulation rate of the breed. The mechanisms controlling number of mature follicles are active during seasonal anoestrus as indicated by the response following treatment with oestradiol implants, steroid antisera and unilateral ovariectomy. Details of the control mechanisms have still to be determined, but it is suggested that the control exists at both the hypothalamic/pituitary gland and ovarian levels.
