Abstract

Whether or not high lactation and the re-establishment of cyclicity are compatible characterizes differences between mammalian species and is discussed also for farm animals since many years (Smidt, 1966). We have learned during the preceding session of this meeting that in the sow - normally exhibiting exemplariously lactational anoestrus - minimizing the number of litters can result in oestrous cycles whilst maintaining lactation. Offsprings once per year can only be obtained in horses and cattle under the “regular” situation of simultaneous lactation and fertility. But it has been shown for both species that there is still competition in between these two physiological performances. For example lactation has an adverse effect on embryonic survival in horses (Merkt, 1966). The problems of the postpartum cow have been comprehensively reviewed during a former CEC-Seminar (Karg and Schallenberger, 1982). Three papers of today’s session will bring the endocrinological aspects up to date.
