Abstract
The Authors described the effect of bromocriptine treatment in lactating sows. Bromocriptine (10 mg) were administered per os twice daily during the five days preceding weaning (21 days post-partum). The treatment could reduce the percentage of animals which did not return to estrus within 10 days of weaning and. among animals returning within 10 days, it reduced the weaning to estrus interval of about one day. In one piggery, where the post-partum reproductive efficiency was optimal, the treatment did not affect the percentage pf sows returning to estrus within 10 days of weaning. Trials carried out in a high (April-May) and a low (July-August) fertility period revealed that the effectiveness of the treatment was not related to the season. The bromocriptine treatment during the last stages of lactation did not affect the milk production as evaluated by the litter body weight gain and by the suckling behaviour.
The treatment reduced plasma PRL and maintained it at levels similar to those observed after weaning. Estradiol and LH profiles, however, were not different in control and treated sows. The effect of bromocriptine treatment, i.e. PRL withdrawal, on the sensitivity to GnRH of the pituitary gland was also investigated. A single injection of GnRH (500 pg) could induce a more marked increase of plasma LH in control than in treated sows. Finally the effect of bromocriptine treatment during the lactational anestrus on the stimulatory estrogen feed back of LH was evaluated. Data obtained indicated that bromocriptine enhanced, although not significantly, the stimulatory estrogen feed-back.
