Abstract

This paper summarizes the current state of knowledge of the European wild boar reproduction. Data on reproductive performances established in several natural wild populations show a general pattern of seasonal breeding. Although the boars are reproductive all year round, the sows exhibit an annual cycle of ovarian activity, an anoestrus period, characterized by non-ovulatory levels of plasma oestrogen and basal plasma progesterone values, occurring during the summer and autumn months. A seasonal rhythm in plasma prolactin levels has been shown, following the seasonal changes in natural daylength. These results suggest that the seasonal differences in domestic sow reproduction might be a vestige of an ancestral photoperiodic rhythm.
