Influence of macrophage products on enzyme and prostaglandin E2 release by chondrocytes

  • Chapter

Abstract

Connective tissue cells produce and release proteases with broad substrate specificity. These enzymes are involved in the breakdown of the structural macromolecules of the connective tissue matrix. There is good evidence that the secretory activities of the connective tissue cells are modulated by products of mononuclear phagocytes, interleukin 1 (IL-1) in particular (1, 2).
