Abstract
The identification and organization of the major cell types that make up the mononuclear phagocyte system is based on conventional histological staining patterns. This system is discussed in the chapters by Van Furth (1), Van der Meer (2), Ginsel (3), and Hoefsmit (4). About two decades ago a similar situation existed for the identification of cells of the lymphoid system when only large, medium and small lymphocytes were delineated by histological and morphological characteristics. Today, the lymphoid system has been subdivided into a multitude of functional subpopulations based on surface membrane differences resolved by antibodies.
