Abstract

Man went to the moon to take a closer look. Unfortunately, venereologists do not have the same enthusiasm about the ano-rectal area. They may even feel that the rectum is an awkward organ, not delivering its diagnostic secrets to the outside world in the same spontaneous way as the urethra. Inspection of the anus and blind introduction of a swab to obtain rectal material are a poor substitute for viewing the rectum through a proctoscope and sigmoidoscope. Ironically, the reluctance with which this organ is inspected is matched by its ease of accessibility. This review decribes the rectum both in its normal and inflammed state. No apologies are made for going over anatomy, physiology, immunology and other basic sciences as they relate to rectal disease. They must be considered before the complex issue of proctitis can begin to be understood.

Do not regard anyone with contempt, and do not reject any thing, for there is no man who does not have his hour, and no thing which does not have its place.
