Abstract
Genital ulcerations are among the more complex clinical problems in patients with sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Their aetiological diagnosis is technically demanding and their treatment is frequently frustrating (e.g. genital herpes virus infections). In this chapter, the term genital ulceration’ will be used for genital lesions characterised by a defect in the epithelium of the skin. Noninfectious genital lesions, ulcerations of unknown aetiology, such as carcinoma of the penis or vulva, and those associated with trauma and Behçet’s syndrome will not be discussed.
