Diarrhoeal diseases in children and oral rehydration in Nigeria

  • Chapter
Child Health in the Tropics

Summary

Diarrhoeal diseases are responsible for high mortality and morbidity in infancy and early childhood in tropical countries. Oral rehydration therapy, which is simple and cheap, has been found to be effective in most parts of the world. This is confirmed also in a study carried out in Nigeria. For immediate intervention, it is important that all health workers are conversant with its use; the long term measure will depend on efforts made by various governments to implement effectively their national programmes for control of diarrhoeal diseases.
