Abstract

Malnutrition with its consequent effects on overall health is a major public health problem in most of the developing countries. There is a need to quantify the extent of malnutrition and health problems mainly from the view point of:

  1. 1.

    planning and implementing appropriate inter-sectoral strategies for the uplift- ment of the overall health and nutrition status of the population;

  2. 2.

    monitoring and surveillance of the nutrition and health status of communities for midcourse corrections;

  3. 3.

    assessing the effect and impact of the intervention programmes for necessary feed-back to the planning process.
