Abstract
In developing countries, diarrhoea still ranks among the leading causes of death, and mortality rates continue to be as high as those of the industrial nations in 1900. In industrial nations, mortality due to diarrhoea declined from 4000 per 100,000 infants in 1900 to 35–45 in·1960; the corresponding decline for children 1–4 years old was from 200–400 to about 2.5 per 100,000 [1].
