Abstract
Research associated with heart failure has, over the years, been aimed at three general areas: 1) The identification, characterization and quantification of injured tissue, including the so-called “border zone controversy”. 2) The testing and evaluation of a large variety of interventions, pharmacologic and other, of potential therapeutic value. 3) Studies designed to evaluate the dynamics and mechanisms of heart failure, per se. The common requirement of all studies of this nature is an adequate model of heart failure. A wide variety of models have been used, each of which generates a characteristic type or a specific phase of failure.
