Abstract
Tympanosclerosis is an abnormal healing response characterized by the deposition of masses of collagen beneath the lining epithelium if the middle ear. It is generally agreed that the condition is the end result of previous inflammation of the middle ear cleft. Thus any of the tympanic structures may be involved in the process so that accurate classification is complicated and the assessment of results of treatment may be correspondingly difficult. I intend therefore first to discuss the pathology of the condition and thereafter attempt to devise a classification based on the pathological findings.
