Abstract

Since C. jejuni/coli became established as an important etiologic agent in enteritis(1–6) there was an obvious need for further differentiation of isolates in order to elucidate the epidemiology of Campylobacter disease. Lior described a serotyping scheme for C. jejuni based on a rapid slide agglutination technique, using live bacteria and absorbed antisera for the detection of heat-labile antigenic factors(7). We developed a serotyping system based on heat-stable antigens, using the passive haemagglutination technique in microtiterplates(8, 9), similar to the technique described by Penner(10).
