Abstract
In the last few years Campylobacter jejuni has been recognized as one of the commonest causes of bacterial diarrhea. In many industrialised countries as Belgium(1), Great Britain(2), the Netherlands3), Spain(4), Finland(5), France(6), Australia(8), Canada(9) and the United States(10), workers have reported its isolation from 5–14% of diarrhea cases and from less than 1% of asymptomatic persons. The prevalence of C. jejuni in developing countries a Zaire(11), Rwanda(12), Brazil(13), Peru(14), South Africa(15), Indonesia(16) and Bangladesh(17) is far greater than that in industrialized countries and seems directly related to socioeconomic factors. Although the global magnitude of the problem of C. jejuni enteric infection in the world has still to be determined it seems that this infection is as-if not more common than salmonellosis.
