Abstract
The New York State Econometric-Demographic Model (NYEDM) is an initial attempt to integrate the explanation of population change into an econometric model and to specify at least some of the economic implications of this change, taking into account the effects of both the composition and size of the population at each point in time. The specific approach involves linking a demographic cohort survival model to an econometric model of net migration and fully integrating the population and economic sectors into a simultaneous system. The structure of the system not only addresses the issue of whether people follow jobs or jobs people but also measures the impact of changes in the level and composition of population on economic activity by sector.
