An Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Clad Ballooning on the Effectiveness of PWR Emergency Core Cooling

Summary

in Pressurised Water Reactors one of the safety issues is the problem of clad ballooning. This is the phenomenon where, following a loss-of-coolant accident, the cladding of some of the fuel elements could swell to partly block the coolant flow passages. The emergency cooling might then be impaired. To assist in the understanding of the influence of such blockages on emergency cooling, experiments have been performed on a full length, electrically heated representation of a fuel element containing a severe partial blockage. The experiments investigated single-phase cooling, forced reflooding, gravity reflooding and level swell phenomena. This paper summmarises the findings of the experimental programme.
