Summary

Statistical characteristics on turbulent concentration fields are given for different limiting conditions in a wind tunnel simulation of atmospheric flows. The data is obtained by a laser visualization associated to digital image processing.

The cases studied concern plumes and puffs emitted from a source at a given height in the boundary layer.

Different thermal stratifications have been used, and the effect of a clift on the concentrations has been investigated.

The instantaneous concentration fields due to puffs have been determined at two given instants after release. The evolution of some geometrical characteristics of these puffs could so be computed. All the measurements showed clearly that the method is of interest for the study of unsteady releases in the simulation of accidental situations.
