Abstract

Geology as an applied science has developed since the beginning of the 20th century. Its field of activity is the natural environment, from which all minerals and sources of energy derive and on which all man-made structures must stand. Applied geologists play a key part in the discovery and exploitation of minerals (e.g. metal ores, sulphur and phosphates) and fuels (coal, oil, gas and radioactive minerals). In the field of construction, geologists are involved in locating and exploiting building materials and in ensuring that the structures erected will be stable. A further task is the provision of water to meet the needs of domestic, agricultural and industrial users.
