Abstract

In order to reconstruct the events that have affected the Earth, it is necessary to have a time-scale. There are, at present, physical methods applicable to igneous and metamorphic rocks, and to a lesser extent sedimentary materials, which permit the establishment of a scale on which ages are expressed in units of time. This provides an absolute chronology. The scale can be used for both terrestrial and lunar materials from the oldest (4 to 5 thousand million years) to the most recent.
