Analysis of the Large Deflection Behaviour of Laminated Composite Plates Using the Finite Strip Method

  • Chapter
Composite Structures 3

Abstract

Description is given of a finite strip method for the analysis of the geometrically non-linear behaviour of laterally loaded, rectangular, laminated composite plates. The analysis is based upon the use of a plate theory which includes the effects of transverse shear deformation. For particular end conditions, two types of finite strip model are presented, one based on linear crosswise interpolation of each of the five fundamental displacement-type quantities (and employing a reduced integration scheme in evaluating strip properties), the other based on cubic crosswise interpolation. Numerical studies reveal the good convergence properties of the strip models and show the importance of including shear deformation effects in the non-linear analysis.
