Some Influences of Material Properties on the Dynamic Response of CFRP Structures

  • Chapter
Composite Structures 3

Abstract

Composite materials such as carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) are being used increasingly in high performance structures. Damping is an important material property and although composites yield stiff, lightweight constructions the damping of common CFRP’s is generally low at fibre volume fractions used in practical constructions. This paper considers the damping properties of CFRP and possible means of influencing damping via use of short aligned fibre reinforcement and matrix materials with enhanced dissipative properties. Combined stress states also influence dissipative properties. The effect of compressive, in-plane loading on the behaviour of isotropic plates is discussed and the strain component in the pre- and postbuckle regions are described. An example of the effects of combined loading on the damping of a composite material is given.
