Abstract

The problem of growth of a crack in a duplex plate perpendicular to the junction of its two sections is studied. The process of initiation, stable and unstable crack growth is analysed by assuming that material elements ahead of the crack tip fail when they absorb a critical amount of strain energy density. The critical stress at instability is calculated from the condition that the last increment of crack growth reaches a critical value. The dependence of the critical stress on the mechanical properties of the two materials of the plate, the relative position of the crack with respect to the junction and the loading rate is established.
