Characterisation of Oxidised Polyolefines by Reaction with Sulphur Dioxide

  • Chapter

Summary

Oxidative processes are responsible for the vast majority of polyolefine degradation problems and the quantitative estimation of oxygenated groups is therefore of vital importance. Traditional methods based on carbonyl index or oxygen absorption have many disadvantages and sensitive techniques have been developed based on reactions with sulphur dioxide; these give insights regarding the sites of oxidative attack. The formation of sulphur-containing groups is considered in relation to attack on polyolefines by sulphuric acids and the mode of action of sulphur-containing antioxidants.
