Segmented Copolymers with Emphasis on Segmented Polyurethanes

  • Chapter
Processing, Structure and Properties of Block Copolymers

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide a general overview of the structure/property behaviour of segmented copolymers, with the principal emphasis being on segmented elastomers. While the authors have emphasized the segmented urethanes, information regarding the segmented polyether/polyester materials, as well as some information on the segmented urethane-urea materials, is also provided. Where possible, contrast is made with the ‘long block’ ABA block copolymers discussed in several of the other chapters within this book. While the authors provide several comments concerning specific work of other researchers in the literature, caution should be taken with regard to readily applying the structure-property behaviour from one system to that of another of varied chemistry. Rather, it is hoped that the information provided by this chapter will induce some understanding of the general structure/property aspects that arise from the wide diversification of chemistry and processing variables that may influence the final behaviour of these materials.
