Abstract

Liquid crystalline samples differ from normal liquids in possessing long-range orientational order. For convenience only uniaxial phases such as the nematic and smectic A phases will be considered; the biaxial phases have been extensively studied by NMR and such work has been recently reviewed.1 For a collection of rigid molecules the extent of orientational ordering is characterized by a singlet orientational distribution function,2 f(Ω), which may be expressed as a linear combination of Wigner rotation matrices, D L(Ω), where Ω represents the three Euler angles made by axes fixed in the molecule and the mesophase director.
