The Pattern of Calcium Deposition in Rat Bone as demonstrated by Calcein Labeling

  • Chapter
Metals in Bone

Abstract

Many heavy metals reaching the skeleton are initially deposited non-uniformly on internal and external bone edges. Some metals are bound so strongly (Am,Pu), that only bone remodeling changes this initial pattern (Po81, Pr83), whereas others are bound more weakly (Ra), so that bone remodeling together with diffusion or ion exchange can vary this pattern (Pr8 3). There is also evidence to suggest that after contamination with bone seeking radionuclides the risk of osteosarcoma induction may be more likely in bones with a high turnover rate (Je78).
