Abstract
Little research has been done on the phenomenon of rising national caesarean-section trends in Europe. From what is known — mainly from international and hospital sources — this phenomenon seems to be recent, widespread, and self-perpetuating. The widely held assumption that (unduly) high caesarean-section rates are in the interest of both mother and child will be challenged in this workshop, and measures to curb caesarean-section rates without affecting the perinatal outcome will be assessed.
