Abstract

Safety in contraception has two main aspects: the safety of the contraceptive efficacy and safety with respect to the health of the treated person. At present, neither aspect affects the male population, with the exception of those males who undergo vasectomy. One has to assume that the condom is a suitable contraceptive in many cases, but the risk of its being ineffective affects only the woman. In the future, when the new methods of male contraception are realized, males may be affected, but at the moment all health risks are borne by females. The safety of the contraceptive efficacy only concerns the health of the woman. An ineffective contraceptive treatment may cause an acute health risk if pregnancy is interrupted by an inappropriate method. The efficacy of contraceptive methods always has its social aspects. Fertility control in Europe differs from that in developing countries. Therefore, the risks of the efficacy can only be discussed when the social aspects are included. Another aspect can be the prevention of pregnancy of an ill or older woman. In such a case, again health risks are closely connected with the efficacy of the fertility control.
