Abstract

In human beings the number of ovarian follicles decreases from 500 000 at puberty to 5000 at menopause. Only 500 of them (1:1000) will evolve through all the stages of follicular maturation to succeed to the final step: ovulation. The mechanisms regulating this selection are still largely unknown.
