Prostaglandins in contraception

Future Aspects in Contraception

Abstract

The technique of early abortion, often referred to as ‘menstrual regulation’, has been promoted by different agencies and individuals in the belief that its simplicity, low cost and minimal complications would commend this procedure to widespread use. For a pregnancy of less than 49 days’ duration the use of a small cannula that does not require dilatation of the cervix has been promoted for the procedure of vacuum aspiration. The commonly used disposable flexible cannulae were developed in part because of the fear of uterine perforation associated with the use of thin, rigid metal cannulae. Experience in several programmes, however, suggests that even when small cannulae are used, problems such as incomplete evacuation of the uterus or continuation of the pregnancy still may exist. This means that considerable skill and training are needed to obtain a high degree of efficacy and a low incidence of complications when using this method.
