Abstract

The earliest account of infertility caused by consumption of cottonseed oil which contained gossypol was by a traditional herb doctor, Liu Bao-shan1, who in 1957 reported that more than 30 families in a village in south-east China became sterile as a result of the consumption of cottonseed oil.
